Chelmer Suburb Profile

Chelmer sits in Brisbane's riverside western suburbs, on a bend of the Brisbane River opposite Indooroopilly, an area known for its leafy streets, character homes and established neighbourhoods. Traditionally, this area forms part of the lands of the Jagera (Yuggera) people, whose country spans across Brisbane's south-west, Ipswich and the Lockyer Valley. About 10 km by road from the city, Chelmer is a quiet residential pocket with the river on three sides. It's a neighbourhood of low-density streets and many fine Queenslanders with timber verandahs, alongside more recent homes, and a number of heritage-listed houses. Laurel Avenue is overhung by camphor laurel trees, some of them very old. The suburb attracts a mix of families, professionals and long-term locals who value its peaceful, established character. Chelmer Community Centre on Queenscroft Street is a local hub, Graceville State School is the nearest government primary school, and Indooroopilly, with its shops and secondary school, is just across the river. The Walter Taylor Bridge and the Jack Pesch Bridge for walkers and cyclists link Chelmer to Indooroopilly, Chelmer train station sits on the Ipswich and Springfield lines, and Translink buses 105, 106 and 127 and the Great Circle Line pass through. Residents enjoy a calm riverside lifestyle with the city well within reach.
